Helen MacRitchie

Having originally trained as a pharmacist, medical science remains an inspiration for my textile art practice. I work with wool, wet felting by hand and embellishing the surface with free machine and hand embroidery. In this exhibition, I have created 3-dimensional sculptures for wall and plinth that incorporate laboratory glassware and medical accoutrements into undefined textile bodies. These forms are a melding of my past and present narratives, juxtaposing science with art and hard with soft. Conversations are initiated when unconventional artistic subjects are presented in unexpected mediums.
