Dawn Kalu

Dawn quotes Nina Simone, “How can you be an artist and not reflect the time?” Her artwork bears witness to an often painful world. She strives to arouse interest rather than portray horror, aiming for a feeling response.

Dawn paints and collages as well as making small figures from card and paper.  This came about one day when she cut out a drawn figure and sat it up. She likes the process of wrapping and forming the figures.

Her work references themes from Black Lives Matter to Australian wildfires, and presently her focus is the shocking ocean crossings by refugees.
