I make paintings that explore human relationships with plants and nature. Research into the cultural, emotional and scientific impact of plants informs my practice.
My current work looks at common house plants, which are becoming an increasingly popular addition to the home – perhaps in response to our ever more busy lives? Through painting and drawing I try to understand why we get such pleasure from a simple plant and explore ideas around close observation of nature, simplification and the importance of space.
Each of my paintings starts from observational drawings which are then abstracted both in drawing and in painting. I like to figure things out during the painting process and so whilst the paintings on show might look simple, they are actually built up of increasingly abstracted layers which aim to get the best possible composition of that image.
